I started watching films through an analytical lense just recently and don't consider myself a film buff. I personally enjoy neo noirs as well as coming of age movies, and my favorite tropes are unreliable narrators as well as Rashoumon-esque presentation of conflict.
My favorites, while I admit they are not the "best" or represent my favorite tropes well, hold a special place in my heart and mean something more than just cinema for me; they are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) dir. by Michel Gondry, Y Tu Mamá También (2001) dir. by Alfonso Cuarón, The Power of the Dog (2021) dir. by Jane Campion, Brokeback Mountain (2005) dir. by Ang Lee, Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) dir. by Wes Anderson, and more not listed. You can go ahead and
ask me about these, I'd be happy to go into detail about all of them.
